Waterford Youth Arts has had a fantastic August as their festival got well under way on August 16th to the 22nd!! What a great week of theater, art, dance and music with amazing helpers and audience members along the way. Big thanks to everyone who participated.

The next big Festival coming up in Waterford is the Scene 15 Youth Film Festival taking place in Storm cinema in Waterford City from November 30th to December 2nd. This is a huge opportunity for the youths nationwide as the successful films are shown on the big screen during the festival and each participant is in for a chance to win one of the 5 brilliant awards presented by a vary special celebrity guest! Youth Voices – Poetry and Prose exhibition mounted on Waterford Shop windows. Young people aged 13 – 19 years will create a new work of poetry or prose which will then be exhibited on Waterford Shop windows for two weeks

17th August Tuesday

Art and Archive exhibition opening in Greyfriars and GL Theatre gallery. 12 Amazing Bands In Lark In The Park This August!!

Lark in the Park is a free entry all day music festival in Peoples Park this August, Sunday 22nd. There will be 12 bands performing, all with an association with Waterford Youth Arts, and are there to celebrate the Youth Arts 25-year anniversary. This is a family friendly picnic day in the park starting from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. The bands performing are Interplanetary Experience, Relic, Herecy, Kytte, Dirty ten to one, Siam Collective, Brendan Maher, Deaf Joe, Propellar Palms, Butterfly Band, Fighting Spiders and Solar Taxi. Throughout the week of August 16th, Waterford Youth Arts has organized street theatre events, art exhibitions, plays (Dark of the Moon in Garter Lane), and dance and movie events. 'Deaf Joe is the solo project of Joe Harney, who has in the past played with Deaf Animal Orchestra (where the 'deaf' part of his name comes from), Katie Kim and David Kitt. Joe is finally getting out there to perform his own music following huge encouragement from Donal Dineen and a few others he tentatively forwarded some demos to. His handful of solo gigs to date have already seen him play support to Fionn Regan, James Yorkston and O Emperor. In studio Joe treats his soulful songs with big arrangements and layers of ambience and texture; the live setup however consists of a simple combination of spanish guitar and vocals. He has recently completed his first as-yet untitled long player, due for release January 2011. Joe also works on theatre productions; he composed and compiled the soundtrack for last autumn's Red Kettle production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. ‘Dirty 10to1 are a band formed by four friends who don’t actually like each other that much but couldn’t find anyone else to start a band with. They have been gigging for the past two and a half years and on stage is where to catch them do what they do best, the band plays as if their very lives depend on it. They have also been described as the best band in scumbag rock today, be sure to catch them play live where you'll be sure to hear such classics like ‘Your mother's an animal’ ‘Send me auntie to Lourdes she's massive" and ‘My mouth is as dry as Gandhi’s slipper’. In the immortal words of Mike Watt, ‘This band could be your life’’

Lark in the Park is the big finale of the jam packed Waterford Youth Arts 25^th Anniversary week, which starts Aug 16^th, and includes public events of poetry and prose, street theater, the controversial play Dark of the Moon, art exhibitions and so much more. Lark in the Park is a family fun event that starts at 1 pm to 6 pm in Peoples Park.

Start Your Producing, Directing And Acting Career With This Years Film Summer Camp!

Due to popular demand, Waterford Youth Arts are organizing a never been done before Film and Drama summer camp! This involves camera work, script writing, and acting for the camera as well as making your very own film. Each group will have a full movie made at the end of the week with a showing of their film debut and they will be presented a DVD of their completed work. The age group for the camp is 9-12 years and will be taking place in The Arch, Barrack St. Waterford, on the19th to 23rd July, starting at 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday – Thursday, and finishing at 12.30 p.m. on Friday. It costs €120 per person. Waterford Youth Arts are planning a major celebration for their 25th anniversary over the week of 16th to the 22nd of August. Below is a list of some of the events Waterford Youth Arts has organized:

* Controversial, original occult play 'Dark of The Moon', directed by Jim Nolan, designed by Deirdre Dwyer, and acted by WYA's past and present members, opens Tuesday, August 17th in Garter Lane. Contact www.garterlane.ie for tickets.

* Wednesday, 18th August, is the Art and Archive exhibition official opening in Greyfriars church and Garter Lane. This exhibition hosts the work of many of Waterfords well known artists such as Paddy Dwan, Tom Casey, Ben Hennessy, Berna Lawton, Clare Horgan and many, many more. The works are based on the archival material of Waterford Youth Arts and the inspiration of the company's history over the past 25 years.

* For 3 days of the festival week, starting on Thurs 19th August untill Sat 21st, there will be lunchtime theatre in the Granary by ex-members of WYA, and New Dance, a performance by ex-members of WYA in Garter Lane.

* Play in the Park is a play written by members of the youth arts company, Martina Collender and Megan Stokes, presented for young children and acted by members of WYA aged 12-14 years.

* The big end-of-week event is the Lark In The Park, Sunday 22nd. 12 bands who have an association with WYA will be performing live in the Peoples Park, Waterford City, for a fun family picnic day out free of charge.

Biggest Birthday Events Yet This August

Waterford Youth Arts are planning their biggest 25th birthday event yet, taking place on the weekend of August 20th to 22nd. Everybody in Waterford can expect oodles of fun events performed by the youths of WYA and its past members. Nearly all the events are free to the public and it’s beginning to look like a great weekend of performances with ex-members returning from the UK and the US to take part. There will be public shows of theatre performances, dance performances, public readings of plays, outdoor street theatre, art exhibitions, creative writing and a revival of the ‘Lark in the Park’ – after a 25 year absence. Battle It Out For The Arch Factor

Waterford Youth Arts is organizing a Proms night for all the members of the arts company. The main theme of the night is Hollywood Red Carpet and they will be graced by the ‘paparazzi’ while entering the Forum. On this night, the youths of the organization are battling it out for The Arch Factor, where each contestant will be doing their thing and showing off their skills to impress WYA’s three ‘very tough’ judges. The winning contestants will be crowned The Arch Factors most talented. Members should get their glad rags on for Saturday, July 3^rd in the Forum, as there is a special prize made especially by WYA for the best-dressed red carpet character.
